Walter Greenwood’s 1933 novel Love on the Dole sold 46,290 copies and by 1939, the stage version had been seen by millions. The British Board of Film Censors objected so strongly to its portrayal of working-class life that a film version was rejected until 1941. This illustrated talk explores the neglected 1944 sequel novel, casts new light on the book’s censorship and looks at how Greenwood supported the People’s War and the welfare state.
