The Foundry

Artist Martin F Bedford’s posters were the public face of arts venue The Leadmill in the 1980s/90s promoting bands from The Pogues to The Wedding Present. Shining pieces of art and artefact these silkscreen works, encompassing an array of styles from Art Nouveau to Pop Art, Psychedelia to Russian constructivism, became the defining face of the venue and were so loved many were stolen as soon as they were put up! His many fans include Richard Hawley and Pete McKee, who he taught, and his recent book Up Against the Wall has been a huge hit and already into a second print run. He is also the creator of this year’s Off the Shelf brochure cover!

In this illustrated talk, Martin will be discussing his work and those exciting times with writer and broadcaster Ian Clayton, the author of Bringing it All Back Home, one of the best books on popular music ever written.. The evening will also feature words from slam winning poet Andy Craven Griffiths and seasoned poetry performer Joe Kriss as well as music from rising Sheffield band The Crookes, known for their poetic, shanty-esque folk pop.

Featured Event

An Evening of Poetry with Kwame Dawes
Monday 22 February
7.00pm

Fusion, University of Sheffield Students’ Union, Western Bank, Sheffield 10

Tickets: £7.00/£4.00 (concessions) from University of Sheffield Students’ Union
tel: 0114 222 8777 - www.shef.ac.uk/union/services/.

Kwame Dawes is a poet, playwright, novelist, actor and producer and was the lead singer in reggae band Ujamaa. As a poet he is profoundly influenced by the rhythms and textures of Jamaica, where he is the programming director of the Calabash International Literary Festival. His book, Bob Marley: Lyrical Genius, remains the most authoritative study of the lyrics of the legendary reggae artist and his musical One Love was shown to acclaim at the Lyric, Hammersmith. This is an unmissable opportunity to hear one of the most inspiring voices of our time.

The streets of this city are spaces where the body recalls the saunter of pleasure and fear, where the possession of the groove, the maddening tattoo is a relentless language. from: ska memory by Kwame Dawes
