Laurie Penny discusses some of her most influential books

Laurie spoke at Off the Shelf 2017 about her book Bitch Doctrine. She also told us about some of the books that have influenced her the most.

“A book that has influenced me is The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin. It is just stunning science fiction. It is about language and anarchism and how communities work together. I read about 150 novels a year and I’m lucky to be in a job where I can do that.”

“Also Parable of Sower and Paradise of the Talents in The Earth Seed series by Octavia E Butler (who died 10 years ago). This was written in the late 1980s and is about America falling apart. It covers race and gender issues and the president’s slogan was ‘make America great again’… Another author that had an effect on me on as a lonely 13-year-old was Germaine Greer.

“I write for readers who don’t need to have read the theory and never write with hyperlinks as I think that distracts from the piece.”
