Welcome to Off the Shelf 2010
9 October - 30 October 2010
Book of the Festival
We are delighted to announce that this year’s Festival Read will be The Taint of Midas by Anne Zouroudi.
Anne Zouroudi was born in England and has lived in the Greek islands. Her attachment to Greece remains strong, and the country is the inspiration for much of her writing. She now lives in the Derbyshire Peak District.
The Taint of Midas is the second in the Hermes Diaktoros series, alongside The Messenger of Athens and The Doctor of Thessaly. Hermes is tasked with bringing justice where there is none and righting wrongs whose roots are sometimes buried deep. Yet in searching out the answers to the puzzles that he finds, he himself remains a mystery. On whose authority does he act? And how does he know of dramas played out long ago?
Anne’s highly acclaimed series of novels is set amongst the beautiful landscapes of Greence – between the olive groves and sparkling blue seas – where time has little meaning and the pressures of modern life are easily forgotten.
“Diaktoros is a delight. There is also a cracking plot, colourful local characters and descriptions of the hot, dry countryside so strong that you can almost see the heat haze and hear the cicadas” The Guardian

Young People’s Book of the Festival
For the first time, this year Off the Shelf has chosen a Festival Read for young people.
Escape from Shadow Island by Paul Adam will be published in July by Random House. Paul has written ten critically acclaimed thrillers for adults and this is his first book for a younger audience. He lives in Sheffield.
Escape from Shadow Island is an exciting action adventure featuring 14 year old Max Cassidy. By day Max is a normal school boy living in London but by night he is a dare devil performer nicknamed ‘the half pint Houdini’. Max finds himself caught up in a thrilling mission where he has to use all the tricks and illusions of his excapology act to solve clues, outwit his enemies and survive.
Both authors will be taking part in readings and meet the author sessions as part of this year's programme. Full details will be posted on the website from 1 September.
Off the Shelf is organised by the Culture Department of Sheffield City Council.
