Skellan Skarsgard stars as a troubled detective investigating a series of murders in the far north of Norway where his insomnia is exacerbated by the perpetual daylight. Although remade for Hollywood by Christopher Nolan in 2002, the original film presents a more ambivalent protagonist whose moral corruption makes his methods far nastier. Perhaps one the earliest examples of Nordic Noir, Insomnia uses the police procedural format to paint a bleak picture of human nature.
