Kumukanda translates as initiation and the poems in Kayo Chingonyi’s remarkable debut explore a passage between two worlds, race, memory, identity and masculinity. The book won the Dylan Thomas Prize 2018, Somerset Maugham Prize 2018 and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Prize. Tea with Cardamom by Warda Yassin won the prestigious Poetry Business New Poets Prize 2018. Her work crosses borders and cultures, beautifully combining her Somali and English background in vibrant, vivid poems.
