There are 87,000 people buried in Sheffield General Cemetery. Some of these are artists and artistes from Sheffield and from all over the world. In this richly illustrated talk, Laura Alston reveals some of these hidden histories including Black American tragedian Samuel Morgan Smith, opera singer Maria Gomersal, music hall proprietor Louis Metzger, elephant trainer Fred Hartley and many more. These stories reveal a fascinating glimpse of the art and culture scene in Victorian and Edwardian Sheffield.
Laura Alston is an historian, a PhD student at the University of Sheffield and Events and Engagement Officer for Sheffield City Council’s National Lottery Heritage funded Parks for People Project at Sheffield General Cemetery.
