Tim Smedley’s Clearing the Air – Sunday 6 October, 6pm – Foundry Uni of Sheff Students Union
Award-winning sustainability journalist Tim Smedley will be telling his story, Clearing the Air: The Beginning and the End of Air pollution.
Shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize 2019, Tim has travelled the world visiting cities at the forefront of the fight against air pollution, including Delhi, London and Paris.
Air pollution has become the world’s greatest environment health risk, and science is only beginning to reveal its wide-ranging effects. Staggeringly, 19,000 people across the globe die each day from air pollution, killing more that HIV /AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and car accidents combined.
Clearing The Air gives insights from scientists and politicians leading the battle against it, and people whose lives have been affected by it, telling the full story of air pollution for the first time, exploring which pollutants are harmful, where they come from – and what we can do about it.
A problem that, hearteningly, Tim believes can be solved, the session is a must for anyone who wants to understand the part we can all play to improve the situation amid the terrifying statistics.
